In October of 2021, Christopher J. Baione and Matthew J. Baione, founders of the 9/11 law firm of Pitta & Baione LLP, were honored to receive the Silk Road Ambassador Award granted by the Two Bridges Neighborhood Council. This award is given to esteemed local leaders who contribute to the “promotion of harmony, goodwill, and cooperation” to the Chinatown and Little Italy communities.

The event organizers asked FDNY Chief of Department Thomas J. Richardson to present the award to the Baiones as a nod to their grandfather Lieutenant Christopher J. Baione who worked in the Engine 6 Firehouse on Beekman Street during his career and who responded to the infamous New York Telephone Company Fire in 1975.

The Significance of the Silk Road Ambassador Award

Chinatown and Little Italy continuously attract visitors and tourists (domestic and international). Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinatown and Little Italy are thriving communities. The Silk Road Ambassador Awards Reception took place during the pandemic, making adjustments to ensure local leaders received recognition for their efforts to bring two communities and cultures together.

Chinatown and Little Italy Feel the Pain of 9/11

Chinatown and Little Italy are located in Lower Manhattan squarely within the 9/11 Exposure Zone. As such, these densely populated communities were directly impacted by the 9/11 terrorist attacks andinclude thousands of residents who now have cancer and other physical and mental health conditions – many who have since passed away from 9/11 cancers. Unfortunately, these communities were largely left out of the conversation for years following the attacks. Having conducted extensive outreach and represented thousands of residents from these two communities, The Silk Road Ambassador award acknowledges the efforts of Christopher and Matthew to ensure no 9/11 survivor or first responder is forgotten.

Continuing to Support Local Communities

As 9/11 lawyers, Matthew and Christopher Baione take pride in helping not only the 9/11 community but also all communities that define New York City. The Silk Road Ambassador award is just one of many examples of how Matthew and Christopher are dedicated to bridging gaps between different communities. For Matthew and Christopher, service to the community is just as important as legal representation for 9/11 victims. The brothers often deliver seminars at local community centers, apartment buildings, and senior centers to educate the community about the federal 9/11 benefits available to them.

After all, local community members share the same experiences of being direct victims of the 9/11 attacks. In addition, Matthew and Christopher have a deep understanding of the loss, pain, and mental stress associated with facing chronic medical conditions, some of which may be fatal.
