jon stewartOn Sunday, December 18, Comedian Jon Stewart and 9/11 Health Watch hosted “Were you There?,” a Facebook Live event to raise awareness about 9/11 benefits available under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

As discussed in earlier blog posts, over 500,000 people were exposed to 9/11 toxins, or “WTC dust.” Of the 500,000 people exposed, only about 20% have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program.

Jon Stewart was a vocal proponent of the Zadroga Act, and its 2015 reauthorization. In total, the government authorized over $12 billion in funding for the World Trade Center Health Program and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

The World Trade Center Health Program provides free monitoring, medication, and treatment for covered conditions. The complete list of conditions can be found here.

Individuals who suffer, or have suffered, from a condition covered by the World Trade Center Health Program may be eligible for 9/11 victim compensation as well.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund provides compensation for pain and suffering, lost earnings, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and replacement services related to a covered condition.

Eligible claimants for 9/11 compensation include those who were in Manhattan south of Canal Street, at Fresh Kills Landfill, or on debris removal routes between 9/11/01 and 5/30/02.

In promoting the event, which was hosted at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Jon Stewart said “There are still thousands of people who are eligible who are part of rescue and recovery and for whatever reason we haven’t been able to reach. They may be suffering from some of the after-effects and may not realize that there is a program to get into.”

Here is the complete list of covered conditions:
