This tax season Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) reminded 9/11 responders and survivors that they may be eligible for tax relief under the Victims of Terrorism Tax Relief law: “Many of our 9/11 responders and survivors may not be aware of tax benefits available to them that Congress enacted in the aftermath of 9/11, we need to do everything we can to reduce their economic burden. The Victims of Terrorist Attacks tax program would help many of our 9/11 survivors and their families, and I encourage all of them to look into whether they are eligible for this important program.”

According to Senator Gillibrand, the Victims of Terrorism Tax Relief law provides that disability or other benefits awarded to a responder or survivor as a result of their 9/11 related illness or injury are non-taxable. Additionally, Senator Gillibrand stated that the family of a deceased 9/11 victim is entitled to a minimum relief of $10,000. For more information, read IRS Publication 3920, which, thanks to the efforts of Senator Gillibrand, helps explain the tax benefits available to 9/11 victims.
