The attacks of 9/11 and their aftermath impacted the lives of thousands of people all across the country and around the world. The attorneys at Pitta & Baione are humbled and honored to fight for the rights of all 9/11 victims no matter where they’re from. However, we feel a particularly close connection to the people of Staten Island, which is home for most of our attorneys. As the only 9/11 law firm on Staten Island, we think of the Staten Islanders we represent not merely as clients, but as friends and neighbors.

We’re 9/11 Lawyers With Deep Connections to Staten Island

The attorneys and advisors at Pitta & Baione have deep connections to Staten Island. Three of our founding partners — Vincent Pitta, Chris Baione, and Matt Baione — currently reside on Staten Island, while a fourth — Vito Pitta — grew up there. Both of our Senior Advisors (Salvatore Cassano and James Molinaro) also reside on Staten Island, with Mr. Molinaro having served three terms as Borough President over the course of his 40-year career in local government.

Chris and Matt Baione also attended St. John’s University on Staten Island for their undergraduate education before returning to practice law. In recognition of their standing in the community, Vincent Pitta and James Molinaro were recognized in the 2019 edition of the Staten Island Power 100, while Vito Pitta was recognized in the 2018 edition. The Staten Island Power 100 is a distinction awarded to “elected officials and government staffers, business and nonprofit leaders, advocates and activists who play influential roles in the borough’s political and public life.”

Community Involvement

There were 275 victims of the 9/11 attacks with ties to Staten Island, but the true extent of 9/11’s impact on the community is much larger. Since the attacks, over 5,000 Staten Islanders have received compensation for 9/11-related illnesses from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), with that number likely to grow in the coming years. As such, the events of that day continue to pose a significant risk to the community, and our Staten Island 9/11 lawyers are ready to meet the challenge.

In February 2019, we held an informational meeting for community members to apprise them of their options when it was announced that funds for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund would be cut. We subsequently published an op-ed in the Staten Island Advance advocating for the passage of the Never Forget the Heroes Act, which became law in July 2019. We are also proud to have been involved with the creation of “Postcards,” a memorial honoring Staten Island residents killed in the 2001 and 1993 attacks on the World Trade Center. The memorial was commissioned by our Senior Advisor, James Molinaro, during his tenure as Borough President.

Most recently in October 2019, we convened a Town Hall discussion at St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus during which we continued our ongoing efforts to keep the Staten Island community informed about available benefits to those who were exposed to the cancer-causing toxins stemming from the events of 9/11. Our team believes in the importance of reminding our friends, family and neighbors that the VCF and the WTCHP may consider the eligibility of those who were in Lower Manhattan, as well as Staten Island at the Fresh Kills Landfill during that time period.
